Summer is coming to a close and the “big box” stores have outdoor lighting on clearance. Before you go getting excited about scoring a fabulous deal on the cheapest lighting fixtures money can buy, I’d like to offer you a few tips from a professional who has been in the Charlotte landscape lighting business for a while now.
The Glow Worm Effect: Like with many inexpensively made imports, those stake lights you see in the discount aisle are not made to last and they don’t provide quality light. The solar-powered ones are especially weak. The concept of solar lighting sounds so promising, but the results on the street have been really disappointing. When I drive by homes with these anemic lights, I think of the glow worm night light toys that used to be popular. Glow worms are terrific for calming a fretful child at bedtime, but are not a great choice for lighting a home.
The Airport Effect: I’d also suggest that you avoid straight, parallel lines of stake lights going down a path or driveway. They almost always end up looking like a runway. You don’t live at the airport; your home shouldn’t look like one.
The Prison Escape: Another common rookie lighting mistake is putting the fixtures in any space that is convenient and then pointing them at various places in the yard. This creates two problems. First, you often see the fixture itself standing out like a lonely soldier on a field. Second, your home may end up looking like it has been caught as part of a prison escape attempt.
