Are you coming home to a dark home every night?

charlotte-front-entry-lightingThe recent end of daylight savings time means evenings is now arriving earlier. For many Charlotteans that have no outdoor lighting, or those that are operating on aging, outdated or failing systems, this could mean you return home every night to a dark home. As the night’s darkness continues to sneak up at us, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte encourages you to turn your attention to your outdoor lighting system, (or lack thereof) and take notice if it is in need of any maintenance or service.

Charlotte LED Outdoor Lighting

We pride ourselves on not only designing and installing custom lighting systems, but also providing ongoing maintenance to keep that system performing at peak level. With the dark months upon us, and the arrival of the holiday season, now is the perfect time for a lighting system-tune up. Here are a few things we encourage homeowners with landscape and architectural lighting to look for:

Charlotte Garden LightingDimming or uneven illumination

It’s natural for light bulbs to dim over time, but your system overall should always have an even wash of light that effectively illuminates the property. If you’ve noticed it dimming, or uneven illumination there are bulbs out or the light is no longer cohesive across all sections and it may be time to have your bulbs updated.

Depending on the age of your outdoor lighting, you may have halogen lights that will dim more quickly. We now recommend converting your halogen system to LED for added energy-efficiency and performance. The typically LED light lasts up to 50,000 hours. An LED upgrade or conversion is much easier than you may think. In the hands our highly skilled technicians, you can be getting more longevity and cutting energy costs in no time, and if you want to make additions to your system, we may even be able to add more fixtures to your current transformer than you thought. Since LEDs use less wattage, more lights can be added than if they were halogen.Install lens covers to keep your outdoor lighting looking its best.

Lights and lens covers

The Queen City is revered for its abundance of beautiful trees, however this time of year means those trees are losing their leaves. We recommend any up lights have lens covers to keep those leaves away from the bulb for safety purposes.

Keep your outdoor lighting system's wiring behind the scenes.Wiring

We carefully bury all the lighting wiring when we install a new system, but with normal erosion, wiring can become exposed from time to time. This can also occur from normal day-to-day and seasonal activities, such as fall landscaping or raking/blowing fall leaves. If you walk your property and see any wire, make sure to call us to inspect your outdoor lighting system and rebury any wire that has become exposed. Every new system we install includes a one year free Annual Maintenance and Repair Plan contract. After that, you can purchase an additional year for a reasonable fee. This includes most everything you will to keep your system in perfect working order.

It’s well worth having a maintenance plan for your peace of mind and for the longevity of your system. We will even offer the same plan on our competitor’s plans, too! So if they don’t offer you a protection plan, we will be happy to safeguard your investment and make sure it’s in great shape year after year. If you are coming home to a dark house every night, now may also be the best time to consider the addition of outdoor lighting to your property.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte answers your questions about LED upgrades and conversions

Charlotte outdoor lighting fixturesIf you are considering an LED upgrade for your outdoor lighting system. Or if you are considering converting your existing system to LED, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte is here to help you every step of the way. We are the area’s premiere choice for outdoor lighting design and installation. The truth is, upgrading or conversion is really much easier than you may think. In the hands our highly skilled technicians, you can be cutting energy costs in no time, and if you want to make additions to your system, we may even be able to add more fixtures to your current transformer than you thought. Since LEDs use less wattage, more lights can be added than if they were halogen.

  • Here are some of the most common questions we receive from homeowner’s wishing to upgrade or convert to LED:

#1)Charlotte LED Outdoor Lighting How much will moving ahead with LED cost?

Answer: If considering a conversion or upgrade to your current system, on average, it will cost 3-4 times what our Annual Maintenance Program costs. We only recommend investing in LED if you plan to reside in your home 5 years or more. Much of the cost of moving ahead with an upgrade or conversion will be recouped through the energy savings, bulb replacement and maintenance costs you will have saved during that time. Also keep in mind the “green” benefits of converting to LED. It is hard to put a price tag on the benefits of reducing your carbon footprint because these choices help the environment and all of us in the long run.

#2) Do I have to change my fixtures out?

Charlotte landscape lightingAnswer: Not necessarily. Most traditional outdoor lighting systems such as halogen and incandescent can easily be converted to LED. To determine if your system qualifies, one of our outdoor lighting professionals needs to inspect it and if it is deemed fit to undergo the conversion, you can start enjoying the many benefits of LED outdoor lighting. We can usually retro-fit about 95% of our lighting and we can retro-fit our competitors lighting in most cases following a thorough inspection.

#3) Will I need a new transformer or timer change?

Check for damages to wiring, fixtures and bulbs, and call an outdoor lighting expert to make repairs.Answer: No. When we come to retrofit a system, our trained installers will be sure to check the condition of not only your fixtures, but also your wire, transformer and timer, leaving you with what feels like a brand new system.

#4) How long does an LED bulb really last?

Answer: The life of an LED bulb can be between 30,000 and 50,000 hours saving you in light replacement and maintenance. This is 10-15 times longer than the average bulb life, of 4,000 hours with halogen.

#5) Realistically, how much money will I save in energy costs?

Answer: Your total savings is dependent on the size of the system and time it is running. On average, a system of 25 lights or more that runs from dusk-dawn each day could save you an estimated $15-$20 per month in energy savings. Over the course of 3 – 5 years, this amount represents a substantial savings.

LED Conversion is a Snap When Your Outdoor Lighting has been Maintained Properly

landscape lighting in CharlotteAt Outdoor Lighting Perspective of Charlotte, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of continuing maintenance of your outdoor lighting system. Like any other hardworking electronic device in your home such as your HVAC unit, your appliances, garage door and other important components that need to function daily—regular annual maintenance is key to their longevity and extended use. You can get many years of good use out of household systems that are properly cared for instead of being neglected and therefore shortening their life expectancy. It’s way cheaper to do proper maintenance instead of having to replace a whole new unit.

Outdoor lighting maintenanceWe recently completed an extensive LED conversion on a large system that included 83 fixtures that we installed about 6 years ago here in the Charlotte area. Of course, LED’s were not the norm at that time, so halogens were used as was customary then. Well fast-forward to updated technology that now features low-consumption LED bulbs that are easy on the wallet, good for the environment and produce a lot more light with minimal wattage. Best of all, the bulbs last over 50,000+ hours so bulb change-outs are minimized dramatically, which also cuts costs. This conversion to LED’s was a pretty simple for us because the homeowner had kept everything in tip-top shape through the years with the vigilance of our Annual Maintenance & Repair Plan. The homeowner saved a heap of money because we were able to use the existing lighting fixtures without the need for a whole newly purchased system which would have cost a bundle. In this case, that expense was unnecessary since Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte’s fixtures are specially designed to be upgraded and retrofitted years later. You sure can’t do that with many of our competitor’s fixtures or those cheaply made overseas ones you get at the big box stores!

Outdoor lighting maintenace is importantIt doesn’t matter if you want to add additional zones later on, increase the size of your existing system or even change the size of the beam of light, etc. You’ve got plenty of flexibility with every fixture Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte sells because they are specially made for us to our specifications. We know exactly how they are constructed, so we can easily adapt them to future needs and changes which save you a lot of dough later. There is no need to scrap a system that is in good working order made with quality American materials of all metal construction. If your system has been well maintained and is in good condition, we can adjust it to fit your current lifestyle needs at any time of ownership.

Every new system we install includes a one year free Annual Maintenance and Repair Plan contract. After that, you can purchase an additional year for a reasonable fee. This includes most everything you will to keep your system in perfect working order:

A small amount of maintenance is all it takes to keep your outdoor lighting looking its best.

A small amount of maintenance is all it takes to keep your outdoor lighting looking its best.

-Replacement of your halogen or LED bulbs if they ever burn out (though we highly suggest switching to LED’s as they last 10x longer)

-Make sure knocked over fixtures are standing upright and straight

-Repair broken or frayed wires and burying wires that have surfaced above ground

-Inspect and clean your transformer

-Reset/inspect your timer

-Trim back foliage overgrowth that is covering the beam of light of your fixtures and prevents good illumination

Foliage growth may need to be trimmed to be sure your lighting is not obstructed.

-Make simple changes to enhance the effects of your lighting

-You get priority repairs on your system any time you call with no additional service charges for the visit.

It’s well worth having a maintenance plan for your peace of mind and for the longevity of your system. We will even offer the same plan on our competitor’s plans, too! Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte Scores a Hole in One With Backyard Recreational Lighting!

Charlotteans love golfNorth Carolinians are passionate about their golf game, and we’re particularly mad about it here in Charlotte. Recently, here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte, we have been getting quite a few requests to install the outdoor lighting for backyard putting greens, including one that we just completed within the Foxcroft neighborhood of South Charlotte. This homeowner was looking for us to cast light from the perimeter of the green so that he could play well into the evening. To achieve the effect that he was looking for, we used a BB02 stake light that could elegantly be raised to a several feet above ground and would have the ability to be easily adjusted so the light could be focused exactly where needed for increased functionality.

Charlotte backyard putting green lightingThe family chose the beautiful copper finish stake lights which we anchored to a perimeter brick wall that encircles their backyard. The upscale materials will weather over time elegantly blending into the surround landscape. These fixtures both a traditional and modern flair that imparts an air of sophistication to the space without looking harsh or obtrusive. They also deliver broad lighting across the putting green that helps the golfers see in the twilight hours with a beautiful wash of light that is still fitting in the landscape. When the golfing fun is over, these fixtures still serve to light up the shrubbery and perimeter gravel garden bed in a stylish way. Since the stake light is highly adjustable, they can be aimed in a multitude of ways at any time as the homeowners needs change depending on what they are doing outdoors.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte creates a custom outdoor lighting design to complement a contemporary landscape design by Solow Design Group

Cotswold outdoor lightingOver the years Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte has had the opportunity to work with some of this area’s finest exterior contractors, such as custom outdoor living space design/build firms, pool contractors and landscape designers. Our most recent outdoor lighting design installation was a collaboration with one of Charlotte’s best landscape design professionals, Solow Design Group for a contemporary residence in the Cotswold area.

When these homeowners decided to update their landscaping to make it more complementary to their urban home, they turned to the professionals at Solow Design Group to make it a reality. For more than 30 years Solow Design Group has been designing and building landscape projects ranging from traditional to contemporary which consistently exceed their client’s expectations. As a firm with such an incredible reputation in the exterior design industry, we were thrilled to be invited to work in collaboration with them to custom design and install an outdoor lighting system for this project.

Charlotte outdoor lighting for contemporary upscale homes

Contemporary exterior light fixtures are a great way to focus attention on areas you wish to highlight. Starting with the front façade of the home, we used well lights to highlight the crisp, clean lines of its contemporary architecture, enhancing the urban appeal of this lovely home. The stunning and unique rock wall flanking the front sidewalk is built from colored stones. To bring out the different facets of the stones and to keep the sure-footing of guests after dark, up lighting was installed around the wall. Additionally, to accentuate special plants and trees, compact direct spotlights were used, providing an extra dose of ambient light in the landscape.

Charlotte unique outdoor lighting designs

To bring out the different facets of the stones and to keep the sure-footing of guests after dark, up lighting was installed around the wall.

For the rear portion of the property, amongst the natural areas of foliage and rock created by Solow Design Group, we installed several “Sparklers” (as shown in the pictures below)–light fixtures which are custom-made and created specifically for this project. Note the holes and the unique light pattern they cast across the rocks and against the wall creating variety in the layout. For an additional layer of safety, pathway lighting was installed in several key points throughout the property.

Charlotte unique outdoor lighting designs

Outdoor wall/sconce lights illuminate the exterior of your home and add character to your outdoor living space as they wash the wall’s flat surface in light, providing a nice ambient glow that makes any space feel homey. The upscale sconces used throughout the backyard were purchased by the homeowner and were originally line voltage fixtures, but we converted them to LED for continuity of the lighting design.

Charlotte LED retrofit of outdoor lighting fixtures

Whether you need a single bulb area illuminated or you are looking for a comprehensive lighting system for all of your home and surrounding property, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte is your first choice. An outdoor lighting design can be an integral part of your outdoor living space and landscape…adding just the right touch to your property. Take a look at our completed project in Charlotte, NC, featuring Attraction Lights!

Attraction LightsThis week we wanted to share our completed project featured in our original story titled “Artistry through lighting is what our most recent installation is all about!” For this installation we paired our traditional high-quality LED fixtures with decorative lights made by Attraction Lights and available through Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte. The use of these lights draws the eye to the artistry of the fixture and the haunting shadows they cast.

In this video clip, Larry Spada, who is the creative director and brand strategist with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Richmond, VA, and resident of Charlotte NC, highlights the completed project in the evening.

This installation consisted of replacing two of Larry’s existing fixtures with decorative Attraction lights at well-appointed locations to enhance the front of the property. The project also included the installation of three (3) Boca lights to help illuminate and showcase the planted areas around the front perimeter of the home and along the driveway to enliven the beautiful, mature crepe myrtle tree that is in now in bloom!

LED lighting is a cleaner, more natural and beautiful illumination

Charlotte entryway lighting (2)Making sure the Queen City’s homes and their surrounding properties are always shown in their best light is what Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte has been doing for more than 17 years. During that time we’ve seen some fantastic changes in this industry. In the early part of our business, traditional halogen systems were considered cutting edge, but as time has passed and technological advancements have been made, LED systems have taken that leading spot.

LED Outdoor Light bulbs

LED bulbs last much longer and are more energy efficient

We keep up with these advancements so we can keep our customers informed and up to date with lighting options which have less energy consumption, less bulb replacement, and less negative impact on the environment…all of which are positive savings for you, our client. Obviously, when it comes to LED lighting less is always more.

Lighting the way to a greener future, these innovative illuminators use 75 percent less energy, last 25 times longer than incandescent light bulbs, and do both at a cooler temperature. In the energy industry, as well as for homeowners, the combination of these impressive features into a single bulb along with the new warm and inviting sunlight-like color rendering capabilities make LEDs a homerun, especially when compared to halogen or incandescent bulbs.

If you currently have a traditional lighting system, either because you chose not to go with LED at your initial installation or it was purchased at a time when LED outdoor lighting was not as accessible, learning this information may have you thinking, “I really wish I would’ve chosen an LED system.” Well we have good news–all is not lost. Converting your existing halogen or incandescent outdoor lighting system to LED is a viable option for many homeowners and well within reach.

Charlotte architectural lightingIt starts with a full system inspection to see if LED conversion is possible. Most traditional outdoor lighting systems such as halogen can easily be converted to LED, especially if they are less than 12 years old. In addition, a well-maintained system stands a greater chance at being a suitable candidate for LED conversion and in most cases, the conversion consists of only a lighting implement (or bulb) conversion.

In the event that your existing system is older, we can provide an LED equivalent to any fixtures that do not meet criteria for conversion through bulb implementation due to their age or qualifications. Our outdoor lighting professional can inspect your existing system and determine if your system is a candidate for conversion. We can usually retro-fit about 95% of our lighting and a lot of our competitors’ systems too. Once your system is deemed fit to undergo the conversion, you can start enjoying the many benefits of LED outdoor lighting.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives - Brantley Front Entry

The benefits of converting your current system to LED lighting include:

  • a more clean, natural and beautiful illumination
  • an electric bill which will cost substantially less each month
  • longer bulb life with less frequent replacement
  • less of a carbon footprint on the environment
  • UV free bulbs which are less prone to attracting insects and they are more durable and resilient than ordinary lighting systems

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte and Attraction Lights are the artistic union of light and shadow, where form enhances function

Charlotte-Focal-Lighting

Focal point statuary lighting at Charlotte home.

In a gallery setting, the lighting of artwork is crucial to supporting the meaning of the artwork.  Soft lighting illuminates the image or sculpture for subtle consideration, while strong lighting creates strong highlights and shadows to enhance the physical form of the object. In the outdoor lighting industry, your home and its surrounding property are the physical forms of the object for which the outdoor lighting design, a.k.a. artwork, of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte enhances…meaning essentially, our artwork enhances your most beloved work of art, your home and property, highlighting its meaning and value to you.

Considered artists of light and shadow, we create custom lighting designs (our artwork), that are a combination of soft ambient lighting and task lighting which heightens the textures, architectural elements and colors of your home; increases the functionality and safety of areas and structures on your property; and adds complexity and depth to your garden and landscape. We are currently creating just such artwork for a client in the Queen City with traditional Outdoor Lighting Perspectives fixtures and the addition of Attraction Lights’ artistic sculptural lighting in 4×4 bollard light fixtures.

Attraction Lights is Lyle Braud’s company which came about after he spent many years creating artistic garden lighting layouts and beautifully tailored landscape light designs for his landscape design build company. For more than 12 years now, he has focused his artistic energies on the sculptural designing of distinctive lighting fixtures which provide excellent LED lighting and can stand alone as incredible works of art. With geometric, abstract, or nature-like designs, their shadow pattern lighting adds drama and beauty to any area in which they are installed, while helping to direct the eye through the landscape.

Although the majority of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte’s lighting designs are created with the core idea of “focus on the effect, not the fixture”, some require a bit more. There is certainly a time and place where it is quite apropos to incorporate a lighting fixture which “has a strong, sculptural presence during the day, and are a beautiful, glowing presence at night,” as these marvelous illuminations are described by Randall Whitehead, nationally known lighting designer, author, and speaker. We absolutely agree and feel that these wonderful, artistic illuminated elements are as intriguing as they are captivating. They can be used as a stunning work of art in your landscape, or as a conversation starting centerpiece or focal point in your garden.

Pathway lighting with a twist.

These pagoda-like pathway lights, driveway lights, bollards, area lights, or garden sculptures come in a variety of materials, sizes and pattern styles formed within the metal housing which cast a distinct light and shadow pattern on the surfaces surrounding the light fixture. The interplay between object and shadow is enchanting, almost supernatural. Unique features include a light source hidden inside the cap of the fixtures (this prevents the glare typically associated with a traditional pagoda light and many of the bollards available today), inserts made of art glass and acrylic as well as those made of traditional clear glass, signature design elements and the ability to integrate custom graphics and fixture design for a distinguished outdoor lighting design.
