Houzz Confirms Lighting Desires that Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte’s Clients Already Demand

Backyard-pergola-lightingThose of us at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte aren’t surprised by the recent survey conducted by Houzz that point out automated outdoor lighting is all the rage among homeowners. The article also indicates upgrades in exterior lighting that convert them from outdated traditional halogens to energy-saving LED’s rose to 32% of homes compared to 28% last year. We know this is unequivocally true because we are doing a HUGE amount of new LED installs and retro-fits to existing halogen systems.

Houzz found that homeowners are very interested in lighting key areas that primarily add not only beauty, but also add a safety factor to their properties, too. They study showed that target areas families most want to illuminate are:

  • Elizabeth Outdoor LightingPathways — 60%
  • Decks/Patios — 57%
  • Trees/Shrubs — 53%
  • Steps — 32%
  • Home Architecture — 28%
  • Driveway — 26%
  • Water Features — 24%
  • Outdoor Structures — 24%
  • Pots/Plants — 21%
  • Swimming Pool — 10%
  • Art/Sculpture — 9%

Clearly, areas that families most utilize are what are important to them, and decks/patios are one of the most extensively used areas in most backyards in America thanks to barbeques, dining, relaxing and outdoor entertaining. Houzz also found that more than half of homeowners prefer to use the expertise of a lighting designer when it comes to the layout of their landscape system. There is no comparison to the quality of our USA made fixtures in contrast to what is sold at the big box home improvement stores. Our high-grade, all-metal fixtures are designed to last for years regardless of sun, rain, ice and snow; and we use the thickest gauge wire available on the market today. Our competitors use cheap materials that break down after only a few seasons and do not back their products.

We listen to how your family lives outdoors and we cater your lighting plan specifically to the areas where you precisely want to add more light. We know your paths and walkways are zones that help you travel from part of your garden to another, so getting you around your property safely is a must. We will ensure your deck/patio not only looks fabulous in the evening hours, but provides plenty of usability for grilling, parties and just hanging out enjoying nature with the kids. Steps are a significant area that worries many homeowners because they don’t want their visitors to trip and fall, so we can ensure good lighting gives your guests sure-footing.

Our LED’s put us at the top in the Queen City for beautiful outdoor lighting designs.

Charlotte entryway lighting (2)LED lighting truly is a worldwide trending topic right now. Their popularity isn’t surprising, as they are lighting the way to a greener future. These innovative illuminators are doing this by using 75 percent less energy, lasting 25 times longer than incandescent light bulbs, and doing both of those desirable acts at a cooler temperature. In the energy industry the combination of these impressive features into a single bulb is a homerun, especially when compared to halogen or incandescent bulbs. However, for lighting designers and homeowners these features made LED bulbs intriguing, but could in no way make up for their lack of the warm and inviting sunlight-like color rendering capability. This is certainly not true for today’s LEDs!

cri_chart_webA good understanding of the color rendering index (CRI) rating of a light bulb is valuable for designers and homeowners alike. Because of the light bulb, we have the ability to be surrounded by color and light 24 hours a day…shouldn’t our interiors and exteriors be awash in the best true-color producing light possible? In general terms, CRI is a measure of a light source’s ability to show object colors “realistically” or “naturally” compared to a familiar reference source, either incandescent light or daylight. Daylight has the peak CRI of 100 and the newer LEDs have a 90.

The CRI rating tells the consumer the color temperature of the light emitted by an LED. 2,700 – 3,000 Kelvin (K) is the optimal color temperature for warm, natural light. Anything over 3,200 will appear blue; anything below 2,700 has insufficient lumen output for effective illumination. Any LED which has no CRI rating, is most likely poorly manufactured and will provide a cold sterile blue hue. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte uses CREE LEDs (CRI rating of 3,000K) in our outdoor lighting systems because they are the most optimal for outdoor lighting with a warm, natural feel.

Bring new life to your Charlotte home with outdoor lightingThe technological color quality improvements of the LED lighting today is how Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte is able to bring residents of the Queen City the most cutting edge, energy-efficient, durable, and beautiful outdoor lighting designs. Although CREE LEDs are more expensive than others on the market, they are guaranteed to give you the look you want from your outdoor lighting system. We are proud to use CREE bulbs as they were developed right here in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina with many years of research and development for the ultimate in lighting appearance and performance.

Warm Holiday Wishes From Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte

As we begin to wind down for the holidays, I always like to take a little time to reflect on this year’s accomplishments. 2014 was a good year for us here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte and so much of that is attributed to our current clients, both old and new. We appreciate all your business and the friendships we have developed with you and thank you for helping make this a great year.

Path lighting installed in the Cotswold area.

Path lighting installed in the Cotswold area.

This year we’ve had a variety of outdoor lighting jobs, both small add-ons’ all the way up to large new installs for both residential and commercial clients and even entrances to subdivisions around Charlotte. What stands out the most is the use of our energy-efficient LED outdoor lighting. Because it looks as warm and natural as our older halogen technology, almost all new installs are using the LEDs and many of our existing clients with older systems are having their fixtures retrofitted to our LEDs. The energy-efficiencies can’t be beat and that along with lower maintenance costs and the environmental impact make it a great choice.

We continue to have a great working relationship with Solow Design Group here in Charlotte. Their landscape designs are second to none and the beauty they create, along with the high-quality outdoor lighting we install, can be seen all over the Charlotte area. In fact, some of our designs together are displayed on their website and our Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte photo gallery.

There have been many more exciting projects we have completed this year and quite a few on the books already for next year. We are blessed to have a booming business and look forward to the new designs we will customize for our clients. So, as we say goodbye to 2014 and start planning for a great 2015, we want to wish each of you warm holiday wishes and hopes for a prosperous new year.

Give the Gift of Charlotte Outdoor Lighting

Give the gift of outdoor lighting this year.

Give the gift of outdoor lighting this year.

So many gifts that we give have a very limited lifespan. Technology toys become obsolete so quickly and many other gifts break or go out of style in a matter of months. A Charlotte outdoor lighting system is a gift you can give yourself and your home that will pay dividends for many years to come– perhaps even for as long as you own your home.

The first thing you will notice after installation of your new custom-designed system is how great it makes your home look from the street. As you pull up in front of your house or into your driveway after dark, you will feel a little more relaxed and at peace. Your home is welcoming you back with its brightness and warmth. Others will notice the change as well; neighbors and friends will comment on how great your home looks– did you have work done?

Once spring rolls around, you will find that you are spending more time out in the yard. The landscaping and garden look terrific and it’s much easier and more fun to spend time out on the patio or deck. Families that have a lighted outdoor living area are out in the yard more often and stay there for longer stretches of time. High quality lighting is the most important component to enjoying your outdoor living spaces. Your lighting is buying you extra time with friends and family.

Outdoor lighting makes your home look good all year long.

Outdoor lighting makes your home look good all year long.

Too many homeowners wait until the last few weeks before they put their home on the market to make the improvements that they have always wanted for their property. Make sure you make the upgrades that will improve your quality of life at home now so that you can enjoy them. Wonderful amenities like Charlotte landscape lighting should be something you purchase and use yourself, not just pass along to your home’s next owner.

Give Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte a call so we can show you what an investment in outdoor lighting will mean to your life and home.

What Does an Outdoor Lighting Pro Bring to the Table?

Landscape lighting done professionally adds value to your home.

Landscape lighting done professionally adds value to your home.

If you have ever tried your hand at another person’s job, you know the potential pitfalls you can run into when you are attempting a new task with unfamiliar tools. Charlotte landscape lighting is a classic example of a project that is deceptively difficult for the average homeowner. Fortunately, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte can help you out.

One advantage that outdoor lighting design professionals have is that they are experienced at thinking in three dimensions. When they approach facade lighting, they work their way up and down and side to side, always considering special architectural features that create a feeling of depth. Your home isn’t flat and your lighting shouldn’t make it look that way.

Every home gets a custom design to highlight their best features.

Every home gets a custom design to highlight their best features.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte also understands that your home doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Our experienced exterior lighting designers give careful consideration to your entire property and how your house looks within that environment. If you have outdoor living spaces, gardens or outbuildings, they will work to create a design that integrates all the parts of your property into one comprehensive and attractive plan.

There are dozens of tricks, tools and specialty lighting techniques that our pros regularly use to make their projects really stand out at night. Moon lighting, for instance, creates the effect of a bright full moon shining down through the trees onto your property, regardless of how big the actual moon may be on any given night. Sometimes even we barely notice that the light comes from a fixture and not the sky. It’s extremely difficult to pull off a special effect like moon lighting if you are an amateur.

Our solid copper fixtures blend in with their surroundings.

Perhaps the biggest advantage the professional has in Charlotte outdoor architectural lighting is knowing which tools to use when. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte has access to reliable, reputable suppliers and only uses the highest quality brass, copper and heavy-duty pvc lighting fixtures handcrafted for exterior use. We know when a well light should be used instead of a spot light (or something else entirely). We also have an eye for potential nighttime safety hazards and make them our highest priority.

Exterior home lighting is an investment in your property that will pay dividends in increased safety, security and curb appeal. Give us a call for a free consultation and we will show you the professional advantage only Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte can give you.

Why Color Rendering Index Matters in LED Outdoor Lighting

With our high quality LEDs, LED outdoor lighting just became a lot more appealing.

With our high quality LEDs, LED outdoor lighting just became a lot more appealing.

As LED outdoor lighting gains popularity, many homeowners are rejoicing. At last, Charlotte residents can have an energy efficient, durable, and beautiful outdoor lighting. Just a few short years ago when LED emerged as an outdoor lighting option, it was not popular with designers or homeowners because of its look. Older LEDs emitted a bluish light that appeared cold, and it was just not as appealing as halogen. But within the past few years, LED outdoor lighting has made dramatic advancements, primarily due to the efforts of LED research and manufacturing company CREE. Now, Charlotte homeowners really can have it all – energy efficiency, durability, and beauty. But beware! Not all LEDs are created equal.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte endorses LED outdoor lighting, and as professional outdoor lighting designers, we wouldn’t do this if LEDs couldn’t look just as beautiful as other options. But there is still a lot of variation between products by different LED manufactures. Just because there have been advancements in quality doesn’t mean you will get the look you want. There are still many LEDs on the market that produce cold light. So how can you be sure the LEDs you choose for your outdoor lighting will be warm, natural, and inviting? By considering their Color Rendering Index (CRI) rating.

All LEDs are not created equal. Know how to tell the difference between high and low quality.

All LEDs are not created equal. Know how to tell the difference between high and low quality.

The next time you are in a home improvement store stroll down the light bulb aisle and check the LEDs you find there. Some manufactures will have a CRI rating somewhere on the packaging, and now that you know the optimal range you can judge the LEDs appropriateness for you home. If you find yourself holding an LED that has no CRI rating, it is safe to assume it is cheaply produced and may well be cold and blue. The CREE LEDs used by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte in our outdoor lighting systems have a CRI rating of 3,000K. This color temperature is optimal for outdoor lighting, and at this temperature, we can even mix LEDs with halogen bulbs, and you won’t be able to tell them apart.

Sure, the CREE LEDs we use are more expensive than some on the market. There are many cheaper options. However, our LEDs are guaranteed to give you the look you want out of your outdoor lighting system. There are years of research and development behind the LEDs we use, and that makes a difference in the lighting’s appearance. So if you are ready to make the switch to LED outdoor lighting, contact Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte and know you are not only getting the best LEDs on the market but you’re also getting the look you truly love.

Don’t Give in to the Dark Side of Charlotte Landscape Lighting

Summer is coming to a close and the “big box” stores have outdoor lighting on clearance. Before you go getting excited about scoring a fabulous deal on the cheapest lighting fixtures money can buy, I’d like to offer you a few tips from a professional who has been in the Charlotte landscape lighting business for a while now.

Its tough to call solar fixtures "lighting".

Its tough to call solar fixtures “lighting”.

The Glow Worm Effect: Like with many inexpensively made imports, those stake lights you see in the discount aisle are not made to last and they don’t provide quality light. The solar-powered ones are especially weak. The concept of solar lighting sounds so promising, but the results on the street have been really disappointing. When I drive by homes with these anemic lights, I think of the glow worm night light toys that used to be popular. Glow worms are terrific for calming a fretful child at bedtime, but are not a great choice for lighting a home.

Lining your driveway makes it look like a runway.

Lining your driveway makes it look like a runway.

The Airport Effect: I’d also suggest that you avoid straight, parallel lines of stake lights going down a path or driveway. They almost always end up looking like a runway. You don’t live at the airport; your home shouldn’t look like one.

The Prison Escape: Another common rookie lighting mistake is putting the fixtures in any space that is convenient and then pointing them at various places in the yard. This creates two problems. First, you often see the fixture itself standing out like a lonely soldier on a field. Second, your home may end up looking like it has been caught as part of a prison escape attempt.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte brings professional custom designs and techniques to the table when we create up each of our outdoor lighting plans. This includes the proper placement of the light beams and concealment of the fixtures. Each and every light operates as a player on a team whose goal is to make your home look outstanding after dark.

Let a professional design your outdoor lighting system.

Let a professional design your outdoor lighting system.

Our low-maintenance, energy-efficient Charlotte LED outdoor lighting fixtures put out an incredible amount of light. The solid copper and heavy duty pvc lights blend in beautifully with all your landscaping and they are built to last season after season. They can be put on a timer or paired with a remote control for added convenience. Call us for a free consultation and we’ll show you how great your house can look day and night.

How Much Outdoor Lighting Does It Take To Show Off Your Charlotte Home?

One of the first questions we’re faced with when consulting with clients about installing Charlotte outdoor lighting systems is, “How many fixtures do I need to buy?”

The size of your house doesn't calculate the number of lights you may need.

The size of your house doesn’t calculate the number of lights you may need.

Some Charlotte outdoor lighting companies may offer “one size fits all” quotes depending on the size and other specs of your house. These are typically package deals that come with a set number of fixtures, regardless of whether or not your home really needs them all. On the other hand, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte outdoor lighting fixtures are custom designed to show off the best and brightest features of every home.

Here’s how we determine how many outdoor lighting fixtures it takes to show off your home’s unique style and flair after dark:

  • What are the main attractions? First, we’ll focus our attention on illuminating your favorite architectural features, landscaping, pool areas and other main attractions in your home.
  • Where are the holes in the design? Next, in order to achieve a well balanced, polished look for your overall design we’ll install Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte’s path lighting to fill in any holes in the system and connect different areas of your home and yard.
  • What kind of effect are we going for? Different clients appreciate different looks. If you’re going for a big, bombastic spotlight effect on your home, we’ll likely require more fixtures than another client looking to craft a relaxing nook in the backyard.

Outdoor lighting is about the effect, not the number of fixtures.

  • Sometimes, less is more. At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte, we’re experts at getting more out of your outdoor lighting system for less. Even if you’ve got a lot of area to cover, we can easily adjust the placement or increase the beam of your fixtures. It all depends on the specifics of your home.

If you’ve already gotten quotes from other Charlotte outdoor lighting companies without having a professional actually come to your home, you may be disappointed with the final result. Call Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte today for an in-person consultation where our friendly professionals will outline exactly what types of outdoor lighting fixtures will bring out the best in your home.
