Well Lights vs Spotlights: Which Uplights Are Right for Your Home?

Both shine light up onto your house and trees. Here is how in ground well lights and stake mounted spotlights differ.

Example of uplights shining up on a house and trees at night

Uplighting is what makes a house glow at night: light aimed up the front of the home, the columns and the trees. There are two common ways to do it.

Well lights

A well light sits flush in the ground and shines straight up. You see the light on the house, not the fixture. Because it is level with the ground, you can mow right over it.

Best for: the front of the house, columns, and anywhere you want a clean look with no fixtures showing.

Spotlights

A spotlight sits on a stake above the ground and can be aimed at an angle. That makes it easy to reach up into a tall tree or adjust as plants grow.

Best for: trees, tall plants and spots where you want to fine tune the angle.

Many homes use both

A common design uses well lights across the front of the house and spotlights on the trees. We design it with you so the light lands where you want it.
